Peacefully, surrounded by loving family, on Wednesday, May 1, 2024 at St. Joseph’s Hospice in Sarnia, Ontario, Timothy (Tim) Carmichael John Shand passed away at age 64.
Tim was born in Sarnia in 1959. He worked at the Sarnia General Hospital for 22 years, departing as the Director of Maintenance. He then worked at the Strathmere Lodge nursing home in Strathroy until he retired in 2022, another 22 years.
Tim spoke often about a life-changing experience he had when he was a youth: a trip to the Canadian Artic when he was 18 years old. He went to Baffin Island on an Artic Indoctrination Expedition with the army cadets. He truly admired the vast untamed north and people who live there. This will be his final resting ground.
He also liked to claim “I touched the royal boob”. When Queen Elizabeth II visited at Norm Perry Park in Sarnia in 1959, Tim’s mother Betty handed him to the young Queen and she held Tim in her arms.
Tim is preceded in death by his father, William G.E. Shand and his mother Violet “Betty” Glaab (Harold) and his sister Eileen Shand.
Beloved husband of Laura (Schinkel) Shand. Loving father of Kelsey Ling and Joshua Shand. Cherished grandfather of Bryson, Blake, Jason and Jacob McLam.
Tim is survived by his siblings Kathleen VandenBroek (Joe), Mary Lankin (Sam), Peggy Shand (Don Sim), William G.F. Shand, Rebekah Hummell (Frank) and Elizabeth Bailey (Greg) and many nieces and nephews too numerous to mention but always had time for them all.
A celebration of life service will be held at the Wyoming Legion (493 Erie St. Wyoming) on Sunday, May 12, 2024 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Tim was born on Mother’s Day in 1959! Tim’s desire was to play the theme from the Great Escape.
