Peacefully, and surrounded by family, Evelyn Irene Quaid passed away on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, at the remarkable age of 99. Cherished wife of the late John Quaid (2018), Evelyn was the beloved mother of Elizabeth (Ronald) Taylor, Robert (Ann Sutton) Quaid, Donna (Keith) Blue, and Shirley (John) Kelley. She will be deeply missed by her grandchildren Darryl Kelley, Kari (Cory) St. Jean, Brian Sutton-Quaid, Colin (Kat Remisch) Sutton-Quaid, Melanie (Jeff) Holding, James (Shauna Fenton) Blue, and Evelyn (Evan Rose) Taylor. Evelyn's legacy continues through her great-grandchildren Kayleigh, Doyle, Georgia, Eddison, Quinn, Elenore and Archer. She was predeceased by her parents Andrew and Alice Ethel Bogie, and brother Graham (Ann) Bogie.
Evelyn was born and raised on the family farm just north of Goderich and what is now called "Bogie's Beach”. Evelyn and John married in 1950 and built their life in Sarnia where they shared a wonderful 67 years of marriage. Known by their friends as the “Gone again Quaids” as Evelyn and John were avid travelers. Their adventures in their motorhome took them many times to Alaska in the summer and Arizona in the winter, as well as multiple trips throughout Canada, the United States, Mexico and Europe. Evelyn described herself as a homemaker, but family would describe her as “homemaker extraordinaire”. She always had a project on the go. She was a talented seamstress, created countless pieces of beautiful hardanger (Norwegian embroidery), and it was not uncommon to walk in the door to find her canning, shucking corn or peeling apples to make dessert. Evelyn volunteered for years at Marshall Gowland Manor, was a dedicated member of High Park United Church, as well as several square-dancing clubs including the Swinging 8s, Shiloh Buckles & Bows and C-607 Bluewater Rolling Squares. Evelyn was affectionately known to her children and grandchildren as “our GEM”, (Grandma, Evelyn, Mom). She will be very deeply missed by all of those whose lives she touched.
The family extends a heartfelt thank you to Bluewater Health for their care of Evelyn in her last few weeks, especially Dr. MacMillan, Dr. MacSweeney, and all the nursing staff.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Evelyn’s life will be held at Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia, on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at 3:00 p.m., with family and friends being received one hour prior. Sympathy may be expressed through donations to the charity of your choice (cheques only at the funeral home please).
