In Loving (and Laughing) Memory of Edward Marcy
Edward Marcy, 79, of Sarnia, Ontario, finally hit the jackpot on Wednesday, February 12, 2025 cashing in his chips and heading to the big casino in the sky. A legend in his own right, Ed was best known as the longtime President of the Bluewater Sharks Hockey Club, where he spent over 30 years organizing tournaments and keeping referees on their toes (and occasionally questioning their eyesight). He took great pride in seeing players who had come through the Sharks system go on to play in the NHL or take on coaching roles, always keeping track of their careers and cheering them on.
But Ed wasn’t just a hockey guy. He was also a DJ, spinning tunes and bringing joy to many a dance floors. If you had the pleasure of attending one of his gigs, chances are you participated in rowing a boat to The Rivers of Babylon which quickly became a family tradition.
He was a true Detroit Red Wings fan and stuck with his team through thick and thin, proving his loyalty even when their playoff chances were as questionable as his dad jokes. And speaking of dad jokes—Ed was the King. If you ever groaned at a punchline, rolled your eyes, or sighed heavily after one of his classic one-liners, congratulations—you were loved.
Ed was a man of great wisdom, often telling people, “You’re young, go live your life, and don’t be afraid to spend your money.” But in classic Ed fashion, he would follow that up with, “Just make sure you save for retirement.”
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 58 years, Bonnie, who somehow managed to keep up with his antics all these years. He also leaves his three children, Lance (Stephanie) Marcy, Rachel (Jeff) Burt, and Shane Marcy, who inherited at least some of his wit and charm. His grandkids—Landon, Liam, Lylah, and Dexter—will miss his jokes, his love, and his big heart. He was also a beloved brother-in-law to Pat Chalifoux (her late husband Ray), Barb (Dave) Marks, and the fun uncle to many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, sister Jenny (Steve) Zold and Joe (Helen) Marcy.
A celebration of Ed’s life will be held on Thursday, February 20th, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Stokes Inland. Friends and family are encouraged to share stories, raise a glass, and—of course—tell their best (or worst) dad jokes in his honour.
In lieu of flowers, take a trip or buy yourself something nice—just don’t forget to put some money away for retirement, because Ed said so!
Rest easy, Ed. We know you’re already at the VIP table, making everyone laugh!
