Peacefully, on January 6, 2025, at Bluewater Health Hospital, Michael Gillis passed away at the age of 72. He leaves behind his wife of 50 years, Heather Gillis (Tatham), his children Jim (Becky) Gillis, Jennifer (Andy) Gillis-Delisi. Cherished Papa of Kali and Hunter Gillis and Leo and Thomas Delisi. Dear brother of Jo-Anne Gillis (John Dontas), Mary Lou Berry-McKellar (Stuart McKellar), Gerry Gillis (Stan Marsh), Daniel Gillis (Martha Fairgrieve), and Alan (Janice) Gillis, sisters-in-law Sherry (Brent) Fraser and Lori Baron (Kevin Charron). Predeceased by his parents Bernie and Bernadette Gillis and parents-in-law Ron and Patricia Tatham. He will be dearly missed by several nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews and close friends.

Born in Sarnia and a lifelong resident of Brights Grove, Mike was proud of his career as a Sarnia Firefighter and Platoon Chief, having served 30 years, helping mentor young firefighters and build lasting friendships. Mike was known as "Dobie" to his friends and coworkers. The oldest of 6 children, as a boy Mike helped his Mom care for her crew, taking on a guardianship role that he proudly carried throughout his life. As a teen, he was a 60’s long-haired, Harley driving rock ‘n’ roller who pushed his boundaries, changed some rules and carved a path for his younger siblings. An avid golfer, Mike was a long-time member of Huron Oaks Country Club and spent many a sunny day in pursuit of a better score. Mike was a devoted father, always enjoying quality time spent with his children and grandchildren. Mike loved his time in the outdoors. As a long-time member of the Old Woman River Hunt Camp, he looked forward to his week in the Bruce, a tradition his son and eldest grandson continue.

A special thank you to nurse Mandy of Bayshore Health Care for her weekly visits and the staff at Bluewater Health Palliative Care, who cared for Michael. In addition to their exceptional care of our loved one, we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the staff for their unwavering support not only of the patients, but also of the families and visitors during this difficult time.

Cremation has taken place. In keeping with Mike’s wishes, a private family Celebration of Life will take place at a future date. To honour his memory, the next time you are out celebrating, please raise a toast in his name. Sympathy may be expressed through donations to the Inn of the Good Shepherd or St Joseph’s Hospice.
