It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved “Uncle Bob”. Robert Joseph Gilhuly was born on December 17, 1936 to Lillian and Leo (Ted) Gilhuly, the fourth of five boys. The “Gilhuly Boys” shared a love of a variety of sports growing up in Wallaceburg. Rumour has it that they participated in a friendly game of baseball against the inmates at a Detroit prison sometime in the 50’s.
Bob married the love of his life, Mary Edith (Somerset) of Dresden in June of 1961. They shared 63 years of marriage, looking out at the beautiful St. Clair River where they lived in Port Lambton.
Bob spent his working life at Dow Chemical in Sarnia as a millwright, alongside brothers Gerry and Bill. He retired to pick up the shovel and dig irrigation trenches at the Baldoon Golf Course where he was part owner for 10 years. Bob and Mary were fortunate enough to spend almost 30 winters at their home in Schalamar Creek, Lakeland, Florida where they golfed, drank beer in the driveway and made many wonderful friendships.
Uncle Bob was an amazing uncle, surrogate father and loving husband. He is predeceased by his 4 brothers, Tim, Gerry, Bill and Mickey, sister-in-laws Russie, Marg and Penny, his in-laws Marlene Somerset, Emile Rooms and Grace and Ray Westerberg, and nephews Michael, Scott and Eric.
He is survived by his beautiful wife, Mary Gilhuly, his sister-in-laws Donna Gilhuly, Nellie Rooms and brother-in-law Nelson Somerset.
He is also survived by many adoring nieces and nephews: Kelly, Jayne, Bo, Kathy, Todd, Patty, Shawn, Karen, Kim, Ted, Jeff, Timothy, Trish, Blake, Tim, Sandra, Brenda, Wendla and their spouses as well as many great nieces and nephews.
Uncle Bob passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at the age of 88. Following Bob’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
As an expression of sympathy, donations to the Port Lambton Food Bank or the Athletic Association of Port Lambton may be left at the funeral home.
