It is with much sadness yet great peace that we announce Gord Dawson has gone to be with the Lord.  He was in his 82nd year and lived each day to the fullest and with great purpose.

He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years Neta (Sherwood) Dawson, as well as his devoted children Davina and Mike Anderson, Deanna and Mark McLaughlin and Greg and Jen Dawson.  He was the very best Grampie to all of his 9 grandchildren Erin and Matthew Anderson, Laura (Matt), Carolyn, Mary and John McLaughlin, Jacob, Emily and Andrew Dawson.  He was a wonderful son to the late Neil and Mabel Dawson and is survived by his twin brother Glen Dawson and dear sister Elizabeth Dawson.

Dad was born on a farm in Dawn Township.  It was there that he learned the values of faith, family, friendship and hard work.  He enjoyed recounting stories of doing chores, helping neighbours, his mother’s good cooking and his father’s strong work ethic.

Dad would often say that he had to go all the way to Goderich to find a girl that he wasn’t related to.  Thanks to a blind date with Ab and Shirley Stevens, Mom and Dad met and fell in love in 1968.  Their love and commitment to each other was a constant in our home and a blessing to our family.  Together they built an amazing life and legacy that will touch generations of our family.

He was a dedicated employee at CF Industries for 40 years.  He made many good friends and took great pride in his workmanship and in playing a good practical joke every now and again.

Dad also had a strong sense of community.  We are sure many of you will remember seeing him involved with church activities, Operation Christmas Tree, the Optimist Club, the Horticulture Society and the 3 C’s Carving Club.  He also loved surprising someone with a loaf of his delicious raisin bread or baked beans.  He had such a strong commitment to helping and serving others.

No matter how busy, Dad always made time for his children and grandchildren.  Whether it was at the baseball diamond, hockey arena, birthday parties, lending a hand to fix something or giving us a ride in his “old truck” … he was always there for each of us.  He was usually the one cheering the loudest, having a great time and making friends.  We have been blessed by Dad and we will miss him very much.

A visitation will take place on Sunday, February 16 from 1:00 -3:00 p.m. with a service following from 3:00 – 3:30 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia.

Friends wishing to remember Gord are welcome to make a memorial donation to a charity of your choice.  Or in the true spirit of our Dad … treat a friend to coffee, pick up the bill for someone at lunch, tuck a $20 bill in the pocket of someone in need, and give a loved one a call just to say that you love them.
