Bill passed away peacefully at his much loved Bonnie Doone home on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at the age of 102. He was born in Elgin, Scotland to Jock and Kirstie Brander, the youngest of seven children. Bill started working at the age of eleven delivering milk before school. He joined the Royal Navy at the age of fifteen and was a submariner for sixteen years. He immigrated to Canada in 1965, working at Dow Chemical until his retirement. Bill was the loving husband of Jean (MacKay) for 76 years until her death in 2020, and was the much loved dad to Margaret Brander (2018), Jennifer Jakubowski, Denise Brander, and father-in-law to Leon Jakubowski (2016). He was the treasured granddad to Jane (Brian) Mansfield, Louise Schofield, Karl (Andrea) Schofield of England and Erik Jakubowski (2001) and Amy Jakubowski (Willie Bevan) of Canada. He was also a cherished great-grandfather. Bill was a hard working, very positive man. We are so grateful for the love and excellent care he received which allowed him to remain in his home. Thank you so much to Jenny and the staff of Home and Community Care Support Services, Patty, Jade, Chelsey, Jennifer and other staff from Bayshore- you truly have been his sunshine, Dr. Orla MacSweeney and the Palliative Care Team, Shopper’s Drug Mart Pharmacy Bright’s Grove, Jack and Andrea who not only delivered Bill’s medications but were so kind and thoughtful to him. Thank you also to neighbours; Linda, Kevin, Rob, and Leslie who all came to help Bill celebrate his birthdays and thank you to Rick and Mary Crawley for the special treats you sent to him. Cremation has taken place. In keeping with Bill’s wishes, no services will be held. Sympathy may be expressed through donations to Heaven’s Wildlife or Salthaven Wildlife Rescue (cheques only at the funeral home please).
