In Loving Memory of Ronald Edward Bird (1927 - 2024).

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Ronald Edward Bird, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Born in 1927 in Belvedere, England, Ron lived a life full of creativity, service, loyalty and love.

At the age of 18, Ron answered the call to serve his country, stationed in Gibraltar. Even through the rigours of military service, his creative spirit shone through, manifesting in his work as an artist and later as a sculptor and inventor - passions that remained with him throughout his life. Trained as a fitter and machinist, Ron combined his technical skills with his creative talents in ways that inspired those around him.

Ron met the love of his life, Margaret (Peggy) Bird, when he was just 16 at a dance - a moment that marked the beginning of a beautiful journey together. They married on October 30, 1948, and shared an incredible bond, spanning over 81 years together and 77 years of marriage.

In 1951, Ron and Peggy embarked on a new adventure, immigrating to Canada with only $50 and the hope of a job that, unfortunately, did not materialize. Yet, fate favoured them, and Ron secured a position at Ontario Hydro, J Clark Keith Generating Station in Windsor, Ontario. It was here that they started their family, welcoming sons Kevin in 1953 and David in 1957.

Ron’s career with Ontario Hydro saw him move to Sarnia, Ontario in 1968 for the start-up of the Lambton Generating Station, where he worked diligently until his retirement at 60. His legacy at work extended beyond his own accomplishments, as he guided many young men in their careers, earning the respect and admiration of those who knew him.

Retirement did not slow Ron down. He briefly taught at Lambton College before embarking on a second career as a grower. Building his own greenhouse, Ron became affectionately known as "The Geranium Man," cultivating and selling geraniums with the same passion he brought to every aspect of his life.

For over 50 years, Ron and Peggy enjoyed the beauty of the St. Clair River from the home Ron lovingly renovated. They continued to cherish their life together until they moved into a retirement home at the age of 97.

Ron is predeceased by his sister Joan and is survived by his beloved wife Peggy, sons Kevin and David, and his cherished grandchildren Justin, Matthew, Joshua, Victoria, Natasha, Catriona, and Kendra, as well as great-grandchildren Desmond, Violet, Odin and Keeva. He is also survived by his nephews, John and Peter Bouffard and his younger brother Peter.

Ron’s life was a testament to the values of loyalty, hard work, creativity, and above all, love for his family. He leaves behind a legacy that will be remembered and cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
