Psalm 28:7
The Lord is my strength and
my shield; my heart trusted in
Him, and I am helped: therefore
my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with
my song I will praise him.

On Friday, January 10, 2025, John Cornelius Banninga passed away in his 91st year at Marshall Gowland Manor with his family by his side. He is survived by his loving wife Joyce of 69 years, and his children Karen (Gerry), Rick, and daughter-in-law Ingrid. Proud grandfather to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. John was predeceased by his sons Marvin, Jack, and Kenneth, and grandson Keith. Predeceased by his parents Martin and Grace Banninga, his brother Arthur Banninga, sisters-in-law Gerdy Banninga, Annette Banninga, and Remie Vander Heide, and brother-in-law Art Prange and relatives in the Netherlands. John was a quiet, humble man who was faithful to his Father in heaven, his wife and his family. He enjoyed the simple things in life such as life on the farm, trips to the Bluewater Bridge, walks on the country roads and attending the Sarnia Legionnaires hockey games. He also treasured gatherings with his family and participating in events with his church community. In his retirement he and his wife were also able to travel to Europe and Florida several times. John was employed during his working life as a full time welder for the Ironworkers as well as full time tending to their pig farm. His days of work started well before sunrise and ended many days well after sunset. It was important for him to provide for his family even in his golden years he was always concerned about “Mom” (Joyce). John is now at rest in the arms of his heavenly father and we as his family will miss him dearly. Thank you to the staff at Marshall Gowland Manor for the fantastic care shown to John over the past few years. A private interment will take place. A memorial service will be held at Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia, on Monday, January 27, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. with visitation held one hour prior from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, sympathy may be expressed through donations to Sarnia Christian School (cheques only at the funeral home please).
