Sophie Akerboom, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and cherished friend, passed away peacefully at 96 on July 8, 2024. Predeceased by her loving husband of 65 years, Case Akerboom; she is survived by her three children, Mike Akerboom (Helen), JoAnne Akerboom (Chris) and Arlene Garant; nine grandchildren, Sara Engler (Gary), Nicki Hall (Mike), Melissa Harron (James), Ken Akerboom (Shannon), Michelle Lundin, Ryan Akerboom (Marie), James Akerboom, Nathan Leach (Hailey), and Kevin Leach (Urwashi); and 14 great-grandchildren. Sophie was known for her faith, compassion, strong and fun nature; she was adored by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. She cared deeply about others and was an excellent listener who always opened her heart. Sophie had a passion for games and cherished the thrill of victory. Honest and forthright, she always told it like it was and was often right. Sophie was everyone’s biggest cheerleader, offering unconditional love and support. Her warmth, kindness, sense of humor, and guidance enriched every family camping trip, life event, and daily interaction. Her infectious laugh and endearing phrases like "sweetheart" and “kiddo” will be cherished and never forgotten. Family was paramount to Sophie, and their bond only grew tighter as she aged. She received daily calls from her three children, and the four of them met on Facetime each evening at 8:00 pm to connect and play a few games of dice. Known as the life of the party, Sophie enjoyed a joyous celebration of her 96th birthday with her family just a few weeks ago. Sophie's life was defined by resilience and bravery. As a young woman, she endured the hardships of World War II in Holland. Her journey led her across the Atlantic Ocean to a foreign land to take a chance on love, resulting in a beautiful 65-year marriage and three loving children. Alongside her beloved husband, she exemplified dedication and perseverance through life's ups and downs. Her unwavering strength of will and adventurous spirit inspired everyone around her. She taught her family to seize opportunities, dance until the last song, and face challenges with grace and determination. Laughter was a constant in her household, a testament to her joyful outlook on life. Above all, she instilled the importance of cherishing family bonds and holding loved ones dear. In her final moments, Sophie’s parting words were for her family to remain close-knit: “I want you to promise me you will all stay close and take care of one another.” These words were a testament to her enduring love and commitment to those she held most dear. Sophie will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all whose lives she touched.
