The track at St. Patrick’s High School is looking a little greener these days thanks to its spiffy new upgrades including a fancy green-coloured track.

Last June, the Journal reported on the funding the Catholic High School received for track upgrades which included: a rubberized running surface with six full lanes and eight lanes on the 100m stretch; long jump and triple jump runway and pit; javelin runway; high jump runway; discus circle and fenced cage; bleacher pad; perimeter fencing and conduits for electrical power boxes. These upgrades were to be completed spring 2024.

“The plan is still to have it complete in the spring of 2024,” St Clair Catholic District School Board Facility Services Manager, Tony Montanino tells the Journal. “Our goal is to host our elementary track and field meet which is scheduled for June 4. That’s been the goal when we embarked on this project and what we have been working towards and will achieve — if the weather stays like it is right now — we will have no problems meeting that date.”

Now the school is aiming to raise more money for the state-of-the-art facility by hosting a 50/50 draw, with tickets on sale through to June 20.

“We set $435,000 as our fundraising goal because that money, when we are doing this 50/50, is really money that is earmarked for school renewal projects and that’s to continue to improve the facilities that we have throughout our Catholic board,” says Montanino.

As for the green-coloured track?

“The green is a little bit of a symbol of St Pat’s and the French catholic board as it is a colour used also with them,” explains Montanino. The track is a joint venture between the two boards.

Once the track is open and ready to go, the community will be welcome to use it and book it as well, says Montanino.

“It’s a great facility for the community. It’s nicely located, close to Howard Watson so it allows anyone to come down and use the facility for the benefit of better health.”
