A woman in her 80s was found dead in a Sarnia apartment unit after emergency crews were called to a fire on Afton Drive, Sunday morning.
Sarnia Fire Rescue’s chief fire prevention officer Roel Bus said crews responded to a report of an activated alarm in the 1100 block of Afton Drive around 11:40 a.m.
“Upon arrival firefighters discovered light smoke in the hallway on the main floor of a five-storey apartment building,” a news release noted. “They discovered a fire in one of the apartments, which was confined to the furniture in the living room.
“This was quickly brought under control. Unfortunately, one person was found deceased in the residence.”
Bus said a cat was also found deceased in the apartment.
"The Office of the Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire, which is not suspicious of criminal activity," the news release added. "No firefighters were injured, and the
damage is estimated to be around $100,000."
