Northern Collegiate’s Key Club raised $1,000 and collected 830 pairs of socks during its annual “Socktober” drive, held from October 15 to 18. All donations will be sent to River City Vineyard to help meet the needs of Sarnia’s homeless community as winter approaches.

“Socks are among the most needed items by members of our homeless community, but they’re among the least donated,” said Liam H, co-president of the Key Club. “It’s incredibly important for us as a community organization to help meet this demand, especially as the homeless population in our community continues to increase.”

This year’s drive saw a significant boost in participation, thanks in part to the club’s growing membership, which now includes 72 students. “When I joined in Grade 9, our club had around a dozen people,” said co-president Kasra H. “It’s great to see so many students helping make a difference in our community.”

The effort received an extraordinary donation of 500 socks from an anonymous donor, which club members described as a highlight of the campaign. “It was a great initiative from all grades, and everyone worked together,” said Grade 11 member Amelia Reif.

The Key Club credited its success to collaboration among students and support from the school and local community. “Before every meeting, we pledge to help build our home, school, and community,” said Liam. “Initiatives like this show how we’re living that commitment.”

The club extended its thanks to teacher advisors Mme. Natalia Ferrar and Mme. Meghan Sauvé, the Seaway Kiwanis Club of Sarnia, and Northern administration for their support in making the drive a success.

The donations will now be distributed through River City Vineyard, helping to provide warmth and comfort to those in need.
