Work is set to begin on the demolition of a 300-foot concrete stack at Sarnia’s Imperial Oil site, the company says.

The stack, built in the early 1970s, has been out of operation since 2010, and is located in a non-operational area of the Sarnia complex, nearest to the north fenceline.

“The safety of workers during all phases of this activity is the top priority,” Imperial said in a message through the Aamjiwnaang Notification System. “The demolition will take a ‘top down’ approach and will require several months to complete.

“The general public will notice the installation of four sets of steel climbers from top-to-bottom and a circular working platform around the stack. A large crane will be positioned alongside the stack during the work.”

The company adds that ‘the internal materials’ will be removed first, which will take several weeks.

“Special machinery will then dismantle the structure beginning at the top and working downward. This will take several more weeks.

“There will be some noise associated with this activity, and Imperial will monitor noise levels. Work will be on a Monday to Thursday daytime schedule.

“All materials will be properly disposed of at a facility that specializes in industrial waste.”
