A Sarnia newcomer to public speaking placed second at a regional Toastmasters competition after stepping into the spotlight for the first time.

Jorge Meneses, a member of Riverspeak Toastmasters, had only been with the club for a year when he won the Area 74 International Speech Contest in February. That win advanced him to the Division S level, where he competed against seven other speakers on March 22 at Village Green Community Church in London.

His speech, titled “Snowboarding at Blue Mountain,” was recognized by judges for its originality, entertaining style, and important message.

“I was simply open to improving my public speaking,” Meneses said. “But within a few months, I experienced a real transformation. The guidance and potential within the Toastmasters program became clear.”

Toastmasters International is a non-profit organization that helps people build communication and leadership skills through practice, feedback, and mentorship. Local clubs like Riverspeak meet regularly to help members gain confidence and structure in public speaking.

Meneses was encouraged to join by his wife and found himself drawn into the supportive environment. “The friendly and motivating atmosphere within Toastmasters has allowed me to significantly improve my storytelling and public speaking skills while enjoying the experience,” he said.

Though he won’t advance to the next level—where first-place finisher Clinton Springer will represent Division S at the District 86 conference in St. Catharines later this month—Meneses says the experience has been deeply rewarding.

“This was my first time competing in the contest,” he said. “I felt very supported by the club at all times, even as I competed with people who have many years of experience.”

Now, Meneses is focusing on giving back. He plans to mentor and encourage other Riverspeak members to enter next year’s competition, and intends to participate in the Evaluation Contest himself to support those taking part in the speech contest.

“As an outcome of my results, other members were inspired by my participation,” he said. “I’ll be happy to help and motivate others to compete.”
