Elevated flaring and noise can be expected at Sarnia’s Imperial Oil site over the next several days following an ‘equipment outage’ late Wednesday, officials say.

The company issued an alert just before 7 p.m., noting that Imperial personnel were responding to an unplanned equipment outage.

According to the Aamjiwnaang Notification System, a CAER Code 8 was issued at the site around 8:45 p.m., indicating an internal emergency response event.

“Advising there is a compressor down and they are shutting down multiple units,” the alert noted.

Imperial later stated, ‘Equipment safeguards functioned correctly, preventing the event from escalating,’ in a notice through Lambton Alerts.

“The Ministry of Environment was notified, and precautionary perimeter air monitoring is ongoing. As personnel work to safely return the site to normal operations over the next several days, there will be elevated flaring and increased noise.”
