An upcoming event designed to showcase and celebrate First Nations culture and heritage is being held at the Maawn Doosh Gumig Aamjiwnaang Community Centre this Saturday.
The First Nations Cultural Tourism event is a partnership between Tourism Sarnia-Lambton and the Tecumseh Community Development Corporation, taking place Saturday, Oct. 1 between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
“We are very excited to bring the event back to Sarnia Lambton,” said Beverley Horodyski, Tourism Sarnia-Lambton’s product development coordinator, pointing to the inaugural event held in 2019. “Then COVID hit and we had to put everything on hold.”
The family-friendly event will highlight important First Nations traditions including drumming, singing, cuisine served by food vendors, 30 talented artisans with arts and crafts, and “skilled dancers of varied ages wearing brilliantly coloured regalia dress,” Tecumseh Community Development Corporation General Manager Phyllis George said in a news release.
The event also features live music by Anishinaabe artists Brothers Wilde from Kettle & Stony Point First Nation, and an appearance by a pair of rare, Anishinabe Ojibwe Spirit Horses, provided by TJ Stables.
“This exciting event will celebrate First Nations in a festive and fun way, where the whole family can enjoy and learn throughout the day’s activities,” said Horodyski, pointing to a kids zone, face painting and prizes.
