The City of Sarnia Compost Site will open for the season on April 2, 2024, offering Sarnia residents the ability to drop off yard waste and brush, free of charge, during the spring, summer and fall seasons.
The 379 St. Andrews Street facility will be open six days a week (Monday through Saturday) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. until mid-December depending on weather, providing convenient drop-off service while assisting in diverting certain types of organic waste from landfill.
In 2023 the site received 7,928 metric tonnes of yard waste and brush, the majority of this was collected curbside during yard waste and brush special collections.
Sarnia residents can drop off yard waste and brush free of charge during business hours, provided it meets acceptability requirements. Proof of residency is required.
In general, acceptable items include:
• Yard waste such as leaves, grass, or sod with dirt removed, garden waste
• Brush, specifically trees and branches that are less than four inches in diameter, brush greater than four inches in diameter is not accepted
Items not accepted at the Compost Site include mixed yard waste with brush; brush in paper or plastic bags; tree trunks; root balls; soil / dirt; sand; mulch; clay; stumps; stump grindings; wood chips; stones / rocks; black walnuts; pine needles; ferns; acorns; and pet feces.
Woodchips, mulch and compost are also available at a cost via the facility. Payment can be made via debit or credit card.
