Let's talk about zoning reform

The Sarnia Journal has partnered with the nuSarnia Foundation to feature a series of stories promoting active transportation and community wellness.

Let’s shape a brighter future in 2024! Zoning reform is the key to unlocking affordable housing and economic revitalization. Here's what we mean:

1. Bye-Bye Minimum Parking Requirements

Scrap those mandatory parking lots! They're expensive, raise housing costs, and tie us to car-centric growth. Let's pave the way for accessible and cost-effective housing.

2. Hello to Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs)

Small units, big solutions! ADUs bring extra housing options, boosting income for homeowners and creating new rental spaces in prime neighborhoods. It's a win-win!

3. Downsizing Minimum Lot & Unit Size Mandates

No more size restrictions! Everyone deserves a spot, and these rules just drive up costs and segregate our cities. Let's build diverse, affordable homes for all.

4. Swift Approvals, Less Red Tape

Cut the bureaucracy! Quick approvals, shot clocks, and "deemed approved" for those without a decision. Let's make it smooth, simple, and fast.

5. Multifamily Housing in Commercial Zones

Time to repurpose those neglected commercial areas! Transform unused spaces into vibrant mixed-use developments. Housing should be a given in every commercial zone.
