Can we use roundabouts to beautify our streets?

It’s no secret that roundabouts offer a variety of advantages when it comes to traffic calming, but have you ever thought that roundabouts offer a unique opportunity to enhance and differentiate their urban landscape?

Shrubs, trees, and flowers can be added to the middle of a roundabout to further the traffic calming effect and beautify the street. Of course, these need to be properly maintained so that they do not interfere with the visibility.

Ok so, if you weren’t on board with roundabouts in Sarnia before, how about now?

Check out a few examples of the beautification done in different cities.

Roundabouts are safer than intersections; that’s right we said it!

The tight circle of a roundabout forces all users to slow down, dramatically reducing the likelihood of severe intersection-related accidents such as right-angle, left-turn, and head-on collisions. In fact, statistics indicate a remarkable 75% reduction in serious casualties at roundabouts compared to conventional intersections. Additionally, they facilitate improved communication and visual contact between various modes of transportation, enhancing overall safety and coordination on the road.

Roundabouts have a positive impact on traffic flow and environmental considerations. Studies consistently demonstrate that traffic flow improves when traditional intersections are converted into roundabouts. This enhanced flow not only reduces congestion but also yields environmental benefits. With less idling, there's a noticeable decrease in vehicle emissions, fuel consumption, and noise pollution.

Bonus: Roundabouts have minimal operations costs (making them a cost-effective solution for safer and more efficient traffic management)
