Sarnia has approved Community Safety Zones around four elementary schools, a first step toward installing photo radar to nab speeders.

The largest zone is on Indian Road, between the Highway 402 overpass and Lakeshore Road, and will increase safety for students at Errol Road and Rosedale schools, city staff says.

Another will be designated at St. Michael’s school on Hamilton Road in Bright’s Grove, between the west leg of Westgrove Drive and the west leg of Westgate Crescent.

The zone around P. E. McGibbon on Russell Street runs from Ontario to Wellington, and it will come with a reduction in the speed limit to 40 km/h.

Hamilton Road is already 40 km/h and Indian, a major arterial road, will remain at 50 km/h.

Fines for speeding will be doubled in the safety zones.

City staff says that if photo radar proves effective and cost-efficient in other cities, it would first be placed in school zones to curtail speeding, city staff said.
