A visually impaired judoka who grew up in Sarnia won bronze at a European meet on Feb. 8.

Representing Canada, Priscilla Gagné finished third in the 57-kilogram category at the German Open, defeating Ukrainian Ludmila Lohatskaya.

“Turns out 57 kg is a whole lot harder than I thought it would be!” Gagné said on her Facebook page after the event in Heidelberg.

Gagné, who previously competed at 52 kg, fell to world champion Zeynep Çelic from Turkey and Paralympic silver medalist Da Silva Teixeira Araujo of Brazil.

The tournament was an important step for Gagne’s preparation for the Paralympic qualifications, Judo Canada said in a press release.

Gagné grew up in Sarnia and now lives and trains in Montreal.
