A 27-year-old Sarnia man has been arrested in connection with a violent home invasion, thanks to tips from the public, Sarnia Police say.

The attack occurred April 10 around 3 a.m. in the 300 block of Exmouth street, where a suspect approached the patio of the victim’s residence, carrying a large paper bag.

“The accused jumped onto the balcony, smashed the glass door, and entered the victim’s apartment,” police said in a news release last week. “The victim confronted the intruder and was violently attacked."

The 46-year-old male victim suffered a large laceration to his head, along with cuts and scrapes to his hands and knees. He was treated at hospital and later released.

“The bag carried by the intruder contained yard waste (leaves). Nothing was taken from the victim’s residence during this unprovoked attack.”

Police released images of the suspect, and, as a result of multiple tips from the public, were able to positively identify a 27-year-old Sarnia male.

He faces several charges including break and enter to commit an indictable offence; assault causing bodily harm; and assault with a weapon.

“Seemingly random attacks, including those where the motives may be unclear, are a critical public safety priority for SPS,” Chief Derek Davis said in an updated news release. “Investigative resources were dedicated to this incident and the person responsible quickly identified.

“Often these types of calls are rooted in complex mental health, addiction or social issues. While community safety and law enforcement remains our top priorities, the SPS will continue to collaboratively address underlying causes of crime and disorder through referrals, partnerships and facilitating access to community resources.”
