Sarnia has awarded a $7.7-million contact for the next phase of a massive sewer upgrade project.

Warwick-based Birnam Excavating will install a combination of forcemain and gravity sewers to carry sewage from the Plank Road pumping station to the Water Pollution Control Centre at St. Andrew Street.

When that’s complete, two older pumping stations will be decommissioned and replaced with a new pumping station.

The upgrade is needed to increase wastewater capacity to permit new development, but has been delayed by its complexity and the time needed to consult with various agencies, including Hydro One and CN Rail, City Hall says.
