A good Samaritan who found an envelope with $1,000 on a city sidewalk and turned it in has been recognized by Sarnia Police.

Rita Smith, who found the cash while out for a walk, joked at the time it was obviously a reward from a higher power for being so diligent at physical fitness.

But she contacted police, and the money and its rightful owner were soon reunited.

Smith said she didn’t want a reward, but if one existed she hoped it would be donated to the Inn of the Good Shepherd.

City officers were so impressed by her honesty they collected $100 for the Inn in her name.

Smith then surprised officers by matching their donation, which has resulted in $200 for the soup kitchen and food bank.
