Sarnia could soon have a new mobile stage thanks to the Seaway Kiwanis Club.
Club vice-president Donna Kelso says her members are considering a commitment of $50,000 a year to pay for construction of a new portable stage. Sarnia’s popular showmobile was grounded in May due to disrepair. It’s estimated a new one will cost $175,000.
Kelso told council this month that a club vote is required still but she’s optimistic that a new stage can be built and delivered in time for the Nov. 18 opening ceremonies of the Celebration of Lights.
City officials say it’s possible the Celebration of Lights deadline can be met if council and the club grant approval by Sept. 13.
Coun. Mike Kelch called the Seaway Kiwanis proposal an “intriguing” idea, while Coun. Matt Mitro thanked the club and said it’s a “wonderful thing the club is entertaining.”
Sarnia’s old showmobile was purchased in 1978, was not accessible to wheelchairs and lacked its own power source and audio system.
Last year the showmobile was used by 14 organizations during Canada Day, Christmas on the Farm, Kids Funfest and other major civic events.
