The United Way of Sarnia-Lambton is giving a venture grant to a program for people with a mental illness and living in poverty.

The Opening Doors program will get $30,000 for monthly cooking classes at the West Lambton Health Centre as well as a one-hour, weekly fitness class.

The cooking classes use food from the Garden Fresh Box, a non-profit food buying-club, as well as a community garden.

Clients replicate recipes they’ve learned for themselves and other clients at the Open Doors Drop in Centre in downtown Sarnia.

The program also provides monthly workshops on personal hygiene, stress, communication and budgeting.

Venture Grants are available for new and innovative programs for up to three years.
