A Sarnia resident and Canadian theatre director has received the prestigious Meritorious Service Medal for his lifelong commitment to making the performing arts affordable and accessible.

Alex Mustakas was honoured by Governor General Mary Simon during a ceremony held at Rideau Hall earlier this month.

Mustakas is the founder and artistic director of Drayton Entertainment, a not-for-profit theatre company that operates stages across Ontario. Among them is Huron Country Playhouse in Grand Bend, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

“His distinctive business model has created one of the largest and most well-respected charitable arts organizations in Canada,” a news release said.

Prior recipients of the Meritorious Service Medal include Colonel Chris Hadfield, Olympian Clara Hughes, and skier Sarah Burke.
