Swimming under the bridge a local rite of passage

With his pals looking on, Jack Baerg, 13, does a backflip into the St. Clair River from the Point Edward shoreline on May 25, when the temperature reached 31 C. and Environment Canada issued the year’s first heat warning.

Officials discourage swimming near the Blue Water because of the current, yet it’s been a rite of passage for generations of local residents.

“Freezing. Refreshing," Baerg said after climbing back ashore.
