Sarnia has approved an engineering report for a creek that’s almost choked off at Lake Huron, city council decided last week.

Cow Creek, which winds through Bright’s Grove before emptying into Lake Huron, has filled in with so much sand and gravel the lake channel is only about two feet deep and eight feet wide.

“This is a project that has to be undertaken immediately. It has to be dredged out,” Coun. George Vandenberg said after visiting the site.

Resident Mark Moran told council the creek’s mouth has become almost impassable for boaters, and upstream properties are at increased risk of flooding.

“It was quite an eye-opener,” said Coun. Margaret Bird, who noted the sheltered entrance is an internationally mapped safe harbour for boaters to seek out in a storm.

“It really was astounding to go from having a 10-foot drop to only having two feet of water.”
