Children age 12 and under can now ride Sarnia Transit buses for free.

Traditionally, riders five and older were required to pay $3 cash or provide a ticket ($2.40), the same as an adult fare.

During a trial run this summer, the eligible age for free rides was raised to 12 for kids who rode with a fare-paying passenger.

Just 83 children took part, less than one percent of total ridership, city staff said.

Council made the move after being contacted by a local single mother of two on a disability pension having difficulty affording the cost of public transit.

“This adjustment can make travelling through the city less of a burden on families, which may result in increased ridership,” city staff said in a report.
