When Doug Seville and Herman Hulshof started planning the next reunion of the Sarnia Roadrunners group, they wanted to make it something special.

“We were talking about the fact that some of our members have passed over the last few years, since our last reunion run,” said Seville, pointing to the 2015 event. Another reunion was planned for 2021 but COVID-19 put a damper on those plans. “We threw out a couple of names, and then started adding them up, and there’s more than 30 who have passed.

“So we decided to put on a memorial run.”

The Sarnia Roadrunners Memorial Run will take place this Saturday, May 13 at Canatara Park beginning at the Terry Fox Loop at 8:30 a.m.

All are welcome, and can choose from 1km, 3km and 5 km distances.

“We’re relying on word of mouth, and hoping some family members of those who have passed, will be able to make it out,” said Seville, 72, who was president of the club during the 1990s.

He said the group, which ranges from shorter distance runners, to Boston Marathon runners, is a great source of camaraderie for athletes of all ages in the community.

“I didn’t start running until I was 37,” he said. “I’ve met some really good runners and really good friends through the group.”
