Sarnia has balked at the cost and decided to put off transitioning to an electric-powered bus fleet until at least 2023.

City staff said last month that a feasibility study done by IBI Group concluded it could cost $30 million to $45 million to fully electrify Sarnia Transit over a nine-year span.

“The cost to convert the fleet is very high and there are still many aspects of the plan that remain uncertain until the North American electric bus market develops,” the staff report said.

Council voted 5-4 to table the matter until the 2023 budget.
