Local residents should prepare to see an increase in COVID-19 cases, says Lambton’s Medical Officer of Health.

“Right from the first day of this we said just because it’s over there doesn’t mean it’s not over here. And I think that that’s a really important message,” Dr. Sudit Ranade said Monday.

“It’s only a matter of time before we start to see cases, and it’s going to be largely linked to travel patterns outside of the jurisdiction.”

Ontario reported 700 new COVID-19 cases Monday, the highest number of new infections since the province recorded its first case in January.

Sarnia-Lambton reported one new case over the weekend, bringing the total number of so far to 346 cases, with just three of those cases active.

Ranade said it’s not surprising infections are surging after the province eased restrictions. He also blames private gatherings for the increase.

Sarnia-Lambton is averaging 150 test results daily. Just 1.2% are currently coming back positive.

County council has asked health officials to provide more detailed geographic information to better show where infections are occurring in Lambton.
