One of Sarnia’s most respected landmarks has been vandalized.

The bronze statue of a Canadian soldier standing atop the Sarnia Cenotaph in Veterans Park was damaged on April 6, Sarnia Police said.

One or more people pried the copper rifle from the shoulder of soldier, possibly for its scrap metal value.

“Tommy,” as the soldier is known, has been a fixture of the Cenotaph since its rededication on Nov. 11, 1922.

The Sarnia Police Service is asking anyone with information about this act of mischief or the location of the rifle to contact Detective Const. Jeff Rovers at 519-344-8861, ext. 6159, or anonymously at Sarnia Lambton Crime Stoppers, 1-800-222-8477.
