As soon as Sarnia council approved a request for a rainbow crosswalk to be installed in the city, Simon Harris knew it was the perfect opportunity to organize a fundraiser to get things started.

So the member of the Sarnia Intersectional Feminist Network reached out to his friend Lila Palychuk, of the Sarnia-Lambton chapter of Women’s March Canada.

“We’ve been wanting to do something together for a while now, and this was perfect,” said Harris, noting they’ve also teamed up with the Sarnia Pride & Transgender Association.

Together, the three groups are hosting the first-ever Rainbow of Hope event on Sept. 7 at Centennial Park.

“We want to match the money needed to install the crosswalk, and hopefully have a ‘rainy day fund’ for the project,” he said.

The crosswalk council approved last month is to be painted on the west side of the Lochiel-Christina street intersection as a symbol of inclusion for the LGBTQ community.

The request was brought forward by members of the Rebound Spectrum Community Action Committee, which offered to fundraise the entire project cost of about $4,000.

Though the event is not affiliated with Rebound Sarnia-Lambton, Harris said it’s their way of reaching out to give them a boost.

The family-friendly event is slated for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Agora Plaza, and will include face painting, food and artisan vendors, games, live entertainment, and even a dunk tank featuring familiar faces like city councillors Brian White and Bill Dennis.

Vendor spots are still available, Harris added.

“It’s a great way for these groups to unite, and have a little fun, too.”
