Sarnia council has tentatively approved a proposal from Progressive Auto Sale and authorized staff to negotiate an agreement giving the city company naming rights of the SSEC.

Progressive offered to pay the city $42,500 a year for 10 year, compared to an offer of $40,000 annually from the only other bidder, the Labourer’s International Union of North America, or LiUNA.

The tentative deal was approved in a 5-2 vote.

Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley, who opposed it, said the staff report failed to take into consideration all the financial implications of the two offers.

The agreement will be presented to council for a final vote at a future date.
