Plastic waste clean up

Climate Action Sarnia-Lambton is calling on residents to pick up some trash for International Coastal Cleanup Day on Sept. 19.

Individuals and small groups can participate by collecting plastic waste from beaches, parks, nature trails and wherever garbage collects. Trash can be collected Sept. 19 or 20.

“We may live a long way from the ocean, but that doesn’t mean we can’t help stop plastic from getting into the environment and oceans,” said local spokesperson Peter Smith. “Over 80% of plastic in the ocean originated on land, where it washed into waterways and eventually into the ocean.”

This year’s event is expected to be the largest volunteer event yet, with participants in over 90 countries. Locally, the group participates in the annual clean up, organizes rallies and lobbies city hall for environmental causes.

Those taking part can email pictures of their garbage stash to [email protected] for posting on the group’s website.
