Osprey hunting in Lake Chipican

Published on

Reader Jeff Hunking captured this image of an osprey fishing for lunch in Lake Chipican on Sept. 16.

Osprey are large, fish-eating hawks with a wingspan of 1.6 metres (five feet).

Though Canada is home to one third of the world’s population, osprey are not a common sight locally.

The birds are dramatic hunters able to dive into the water from great heights, but this one came up empty-handed on this attempt, Hunking said.
