A 51-year-old man has been charged in connections with the death of a Corunna woman.

Lambton OPP said officers responded to Riverside Drive in the early hours of New Year’s Eve.

Cheryl VanHuizen, 51, of Corunna, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Shawn Trowbridge, also of Corunna, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. He has appeared in court and remains in custody.

VanHuizen grew up in Point Edward, attended Bridgeview elementary school, and graduated from SCITS in Sarnia.

“Cheryl was a happy and proud mother watching her kids become successful young adults,” her family said in her obituary.

“If you ever met Cheryl, you would remember her because her fun-loving, caring personality and laugh would light up a room and put a smile on your face.”

A private family ceremony is planned. Donations can be made to the Women’s Interval Home (cheques mailed to Smith Funeral Home, or made online).

The OPP Criminal Investigation Branch is working with the OPP Forensic Identification Services and Lambton OPP Crime Unit on the case.

There is no concern for the public’s safety, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Lambton OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
