Residents can expect some noise and flaring as NOVA Chemicals’ Corunna facility begins a planned maintenance shutdown, Tuesday.
The company says the outage is estimated to last approximately 10 days.
"During the first few of days of the outage, elevated flaring and some increased noise are expected," said company spokesperson Julia Iacovella, adding that there’s potential for increased traffic around the site for the duration of the outage.
Flares are important safety devices that safely burn excess hydrocarbon gases that cannot be recovered or recycled, Iacovella added.
“Our flare systems must meet strict environmental controls as well as NOVA Chemicals' process safety and Responsible Care standards.
“When you see flaring, please be assured that flares play a key role in keeping our facilities running safely. We strive to minimize flaring, keeping it to times necessary for our continued safe operation.”
