Groundbreaking on a new elementary school is set to begin in Sarnia this month.

Ontario’s Education Ministry has given final approval to the French Immersion school on Rapids Parkway, not far from St. Patrick’s and St. Anne schools.

The new Gregory A. Hogan School will cost $21.8 million and house students currently attending the school of the same name on Hogan Drive, just off Cathcart Boulevard.

The new facility will house 659 students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8, and include a five-room childcare centre to be operated by Lambton County, the St. Clair Catholic District School Board said.

The board has received a $200,000 donation from the Hogan family for an expanded 900-square-foot community room.

The school is expected to open in 2023.

Students currently attending Sacred Heart School will move to the current Gregory A. Hogan site once renovations are complete.
