New industrial tax to pay for Donohue Bridge

Published on

Sarnia will use a new tax it’s charging on local industry this year to replace the Donohue Bridge.

Council voted 5-4 to direct the entire $500,000 annual levy on petrochemical companies to the twin spans that link South Vidal Street and Chemical Valley.

The Donohue Bridge is scheduled for replacement in 2033 at a cost of $15 million.

Council approved the levy in December after reducing it from the $1 million recommended by city staff.

Council voted not to use the money for other services shared with industry, such as warning sirens and a mobile command bus used in emergencies.
