A local group motivated by climate change is calling all eco-warriors.
Climate Action Sarnia-Lambton is hosting an open forum on Nov. 29 for the community to collaborate and discuss ideas and solutions.
The brainstorming session is designed to ramp up civic engagement and confront the impact of a changing climate, said member Elizabeth Soltis
“We want diverse voices (and) really different perspectives in the room, looking at climate adaptation and mitigation.”
Eco-champions can come from anywhere, she said, including industry, government, First Nations, students and retirees. Invitations were sent to MP Marilyn Gladu and MPP Bob Bailey.
Attendees are encouraged to bring ideas and questions to the ticketed event. Topical discussion groups will be created based on participant interest.
“It really invites people to be energized and enthusiastic about the conversation, and not feel that they have to participate in conversations that don’t interest them,” Soltis said.
Ideally, like-minded people will start their own initiatives, she added.
Climate Action Sarnia-Lambton has four key project areas: political advocacy, reforesting Lambton County, water stewardship, and waste management.
It formed in April, and his since lobbied the city to declare a climate emergency, organized two rallies, and co-hosted an environmental debate for Sarnia-Lambton candidates in the federal election.
Last month, 40 volunteers with CAS-L planted over 100 native tree saplings and shrubs at Mike Weir Park, Soltis added.
“We want to move beyond the community rally idea and actually engage people on a deeper level.”
