Sarnia is about to join a muddy list of cities offering a growing fitness craze.

The 1st annual Assante Dirty Dash for Rebound is a five-kilometre, family-friendly event that combines running, obstacles and a lot of sweat, dirt and mud.

The course will wind through Canatara Park and along the beach and feature at least a dozen challenging obstacles, including one known as the "Wall of Shame," said organizer Jack Poirier.

Sarnia Lambton Rebound provides programs for youth throughout Lambton, and the mud run squares with its philosophy of supporting youth in tackling life's challenges, he said.

"There will be volunteers along the course encouraging participants, and helping them conquer the obstacles. It's similar to our agency's work with our youth."

The course’s premier obstacle is the daunting Wall of Shame, which combines rock wall-style grips and a rope climb. Once up, participants will slide down into a pit of mud.

The event is open to participants age 11 and up. The challenge is building a course that can be completed by youth and adults, but still test their endurance, Poirier said.

Assante Wealth Management is the title sponsor.

"Our six local financial advisors have wholeheartedly jumped aboard, financially and commitment-wise," said Ted Vanos, senior financial planning advisor and branch owner.

“We can support an event that we totally believe in.”

Assante volunteers will also host a barbecue for racers and spectators.

Blue Monster Creative is helping with marketing and design, and the Carpenters' Union, Local 1256, is constructing the premiere obstacle.

Registration is capped at the first 500 participants, and in just over a week about 100 people had already registered online, Poirier said.

People can participate individually or in teams of four, and the entry fee can be paid up front or raised through sponsors.

Prizes will be awarded to top fundraisers and the best team costume.
