The RCMP is closing its Sarnia detachment, ending a federal policing presence in the city that began in 1920.

The Mounties are responsible for federal issues including organized crime, human trafficking and national security.

The move, first reported by the Petrolia Independent, caught local officials by surprise, including Sarnia-Lambton MP Marilyn Gladu.

She said she was “extremely dismayed” that some of the community’s public safety and border security was being axed without warning or explanation.

“The closure of this detachment is hardly comforting to Sarnia’s residents,” she said.

“I call on all local elected officials and concerned citizens to work cooperatively with me as the elected federal representative so that I may hold the federal government to account.”

The RCMP southwest division’s other offices are located in Hamilton-Niagara, Kitchener, London and Windsor.

According to The Independent, some officers working at the local detachment have been asked to move to Toronto.
