After just three years, the Bluewater International Granfondo is already regarded as one of the top cycling events in Canada.

The online Granfondo Guide has ranked the Bright’s Grove event the best granfondo in Ontario, #2 in Canada, and #14 in North America.

Ranking is based on each event’s ability to innovate, achieve, inspire and encourage cyclists to support worthy causes.

Last year, the Bluewater Granfondo raised $60,000 to train palliative care personnel at Bluewater Health and St. Joseph’s Hospice.

“Riding a bicycle and supporting hospice will not only benefit the individual doing it, but the community where we live,” said chair Ken MacAlpine.

“I feel fortunate to be in a community that is so supportive and passionate about both.”

The 4th annual ride is set for Sunday, Aug. 4. Cyclists can participate in 30 km, 50 km, 100 km or 150 km routes.

A granfondo isn’t a race, but some rides include timed sections and altitude climbs in the 100 km and 150 km distances.

More than 500 cyclists have already registered for one of the 1,000 spots available this summer.
