Sarnia’s downtown library was scheduled to reopen Monday after being shut down five weeks by a fire.

The Bookmobile and Makerspace programs have also restarted, however the Library Theatre remains closed for ongoing remediation.

The July 13 fire that broke out in the basement was small in size but caused extensive smoke damage and required the replacement of mechanical and electrical systems.

It also resulted in the layoff of library staff.

Meanwhile, patrons won’t be fined for books or other material checked out of the downtown branch and not returned on time, the county said.

The building is owned by Sarnia and its service provided by Lambton County. It is open Monday to Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
