Plans are underway to establish a Vietnamese-Canadian association in Sarnia.

About 50 people attended a recent Vietnamese New Year celebration recently, held as a kick-off event to get the ball rolling, said Angela Vint, a settlement worker with the local YMCA Newcomer, Immigrant and Refugee Centre.

“We wanted to see if there was any interest, and people agreed,” she said.

Helen and Don Truong are spearheading the idea.

“Helen is a business owner and knows a lot of clients in Sarnia that are Vietnamese. She thought it would be nice to have a place for like-minded people to come together.

“It’s still in the grassroots stage.”

Canadians of Vietnamese ethnic origin make up one of the largest non-European ethnic origins in Canada, and is growing faster than the overall population, according to According to Statistics Canada.

“It’s a chance for Vietnamese people to hang on to their culture and meet other people ... and also let people know that the YMCA has services available to them,” Vint said.
