An elite Sarnia-Lambton athlete and academic is heading to the England to study at Oxford University.

Marissa Mueller is one of only 11 Canadians to win a prestigious Rhodes Scholarship this year, the Rhodes Trust announced last week.

The University of Iowa track and field athlete will join a class of more than 100 Rhodes Scholars from more than 60 countries studying at Oxford in the fall of 2021.

Mueller is a two-time national silver-medalist in javelin and was inducted into the Sarnia-Lambton Sports Hall of Fame in 2017.

Rhodes Scholars are fully funded and must demonstrate academic excellence and exceptional character, leadership, achievement in extracurricular activities, and a commitment to solving humanity’s challenges, the Trust said.
